At least five features are currently rumored to be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models:

  • A17 chip: According to the Japanese publication, the iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an A17 Bionic chip manufactured based on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, providing improvements in performance and efficiency. Nikkei Asia. The report claimed that 2023 could mark the second year in a row that only Pro models of the new iPhone series will have Apple’s latest chip.
  • Faster USB-C port: According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro models will have a USB-C port that supports at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, which would result in significantly faster cable data transfer speeds for the devices compared to existing Lightning iPhones. Kuo said the standard iPhone 15 models’ USB-C port will still be limited to USB 2.0 speeds, like Lightning.
  • Increased RAM: According to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, the iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, while the standard models will likely still have 6GB of RAM, as is currently the case. The extra RAM can allow apps like Safari to keep more content active in the background, preventing the app from reloading content when it’s reopened.
  • Solid buttons: According to Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro models will have solid-state volume and power buttons. The analyst said the devices will feature two additional taptic engines that provide tactile feedback to simulate the feeling of pressing buttons without physically moving them, similar to the Home button on the latest iPhone SE or the trackpad on the latest MacBooks.
  • Increased optical zoom on the iPhone 15 Pro Max: According to Kuo, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope telephoto lens. As a result, the device can have at least 10x optical zoom, compared to 3x on the iPhone 14 Pro models.

In September, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that strong sales of the iPhone 14 Pro models would likely prompt Apple to widen the gap between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, though it’s worth noting that many of the hardware changes are likely to be planned at least a few years in advance.

Due to increased differentiation, BloombergMark Gurman said that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will probably be renamed the iPhone 15 Ultra.

Driving customers to the Pro models would help Apple increase the average selling price of the iPhone. The trend started earlier this year, when only the iPhone 14 Pro models received Apple’s latest A16 Bionic chip, while the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models were still equipped with last year’s A15 Bionic chip.

Apple is likely to announce the iPhone 15 lineup next September as usual. With the devices still many months away from launch, additional features are likely to appear, so the information available at this time is only a small glimpse of what to expect.
