Des Moines shooting leaves mother, daughter dead

A mother and daughter are dead and an accused killer is in critical condition after a shooting early Monday morning in the Merle Hay neighborhood, according to Des Moines police. Police were called around 2:50 a.m. to the 2600 block of 53rd Street to investigate a report of a shooting. “What we’re looking at right now is that there is a prior relationship between the man we believe did the shooting and the younger woman, the daughter,” said Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek. First responders found two people dead in the house, a 47-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman. They both lived there. A preliminary investigation indicates that the 22-year-old broke into the home, shot and killed both victims, and left the home on foot. After the shooting, the 22-year-old called 911 to report he had shot two people and was walking to Riley Park to kill himself. The man was soon found in Riley Park, about a block away from the home. He also suffered a suspected gunshot wound, but survived. Rescue operations began at that location and Des Moines Fire Department paramedics transported the subject to a local hospital where he continues to receive care. The man is still in critical condition. Police said there is currently no indication that the public is still in danger.
